Product Empties: Q1 2018

SamHodgett_2018_Q1_Product_Empties_Skincare_Makeup_Body_Care_2.jpg

Hi Sunshines, 2018’s first quarter has nearly passed which means time for another empties (and favourites coming up soon) post. Despite January and February passing by in a blink of an eye, I feel like March is never ending… Anyway, without rambling on too much because there are quite a bit of products to get through, here are my list of empties and my final thoughts on them.

Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser

Repurchasing? Yes

Ever since I started using this again, I still find it the most effective way to cleanse my skin without drying it out. I have tried other makeup removers throughout the past few months, but they’re barely used and unloved. I will continue to try other makeup removers but really… the quality vs price is unbeatable.

Forever Aloe Lips

Repurchasing? No

Part of my all – time favourite lip balms, I was so sad to see this finished as I still have no idea where to get my hands on it (this one was gifted to me). Which means, I’m on the hunt for a new lip balm. Despite having tested out many already, nothing comes close so let me know what your favourites are and I will definitely test them out.

Olay Deep Cleansing Line, Daily Renewal Cleanser

Repurchasing? Yes

I think it’s been already a year since I first tested this out and am still hooked on this cleanser as part of my evening second cleanse. Non-foaming, creamy with mild beads that are effective for daily exfoliating on dry patches. I’ve been through countless of bottles but I am going to start exploring a few other cleansers just to see what’s out there, but will always have a tube of this as a failsafe.

Benefit Whats Up Highlighter

Repurchasing? Maybe

Whilst this is my favourite highlighter (I prefer a subtle “glow from within” than a “blinding” or glittery one), I’m not too sure whether I’ll repurchase this… yet. I’ve never really gotten on to the highlighter bandwagon, so I am exploring new products before I do repurchase this.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof

Repurchasing? No

I’ve mentioned in my Maybelline Mascara Showdown post that I do love this waterproof version, but I won’t be repurchasing it for two reasons. First, I have several mascaras currently open that need to be used by within the next one to two months; and I want to try a few other Lash Sensational versions once my other mascaras expire.

Avene Rich Hydrating Cream

Repurchasing? Yes

I started using this towards the end of last year when my skin was extremely dry and sensitive and I immediately fell in love. It is a thicker moisturiser that truly hydrates my skin from within. I wouldn’t use this in the summer months because it is very rich (they do have a light version which I will test out once the weather becomes unbearably hot and humid again). I do put on a thicker layer in the evenings, but a little does go a long way for day time use. One tube lasts me about a month or less depending, so it can be a bit pricey but to me it’s worth it since my dry winter skin loves it.

La Roche Posay Micellar Water and Toleraine Ultra

Repurchasing? Micellar Water – No / Toleraine Ultra - Yes

I’ve done a review on a La Roche Posay kit with these products in it, so I won’t go into detail on these. I haven’t repurchased the Toleraine Ultra as of yet, but it is on my shopping list!

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask [ Lavender ]

Repurchasing? No

I’ve been using the original Laneige Water Sleeping Mask for years and years, so of course I had to try out the Lavender version. Final verdict? I don’t like the scent of this one and I feel like it didn’t give me the same hydrated results as the original version, so the lavender one is a pass for me.

Laneige Clear-C Peeling Mask

Repurchasing? Maybe

I’ve done a review on this mask before and I do love and want to repurchase this, but I am currently going through many exfoliators so it is on my “not so urgent” to buy list.

Dr Wu Extra Hydrating Lotion with Hyaluronic Acid

Repurchasing? Yes

I’ve stumbled upon a pleasantly surprising new to me brand from Taiwan; Dr Wu. I want to test out more from the brand so I can do a brand review in the future, but this lotion has definite approval stamps from me.  Personally, I use this lotion more as a serum right before my moisturiser because it is a little too light for in the winter, but I think in the summer or oilier skin types can do with just this.

Make Up Forever Mist & Fix

Repurchasing? Yes

I have a love-hate relationship with standing in line for the cashier at Sephora or any beauty store for that matter. Most of them have these travel sized items that are often times not of great price value, but they’re cheaper than the full size so you get tempted and buy them anyway. I bought this last year back when I was in Malaysia and I actually prefer this over the Mac Fix+. It is slightly more expensive but I feel like it gets the job done better at making my powdered face look more dewy and fresh, so yes this will replace my Mac Fix+ for now.

Body Care

I will only briefly mention the body and hair care products, because I have mentioned most in previous posts before so I will link them as well; plus this post will be so much longer than it already is!

Nivea Firming Body Lotion

Repurchasing? Yes

Body Shop Peppermint Foot Spray

Repurchasing? Yes

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5

Repurchasing? Yes

Organic Surge Shampoo and Conditioner

Repurchasing? No

These products were in my year end favourite but I won’t be repurchasing this. I have noticed that once you’re near the end the scent goes off and it smells pretty bad, so either use it quickly or throw it out before it finishes. I still stand by that I love this shampoo and conditioner for how soft it makes my hair (before the scent was off), however I’m currently testing out others.

Batiste Dry Shampoo

Repurchasing? No

I’ve found that more and more variety of dry shampoos are finally coming to the HK drugstores, so I won’t be repurchasing this for now and test the others out.

Tony & Guy

·     Heat Protection Mist

·     Leave In Conditioner

·     Sea Salt Texturising Spray

Repurchasing? No

I used to love Tony & Guy products and while I still don’t mind them, I feel like these are not as effective anymore as they once were. It’s probably cause I’ve had them for quite a while, but I do want to try out and move onto other brands for hair care.

Hask Keratin Protein Smoothing Deep Conditioner

Repurchasing? Yes

While trialling out new hair products, I discovered that Hask has expanded into more and more drugstores here so I have tested out a few hair care items and so far I have been enjoying them quite a bit. Their products are free of sulphates, parabens, phthalates, gluten and drying alcohol. This product in particular lasted me about 5 times on my thin hair (more if you’re a bit more conscious about how much you’re using) and it made my hair feel soft and supple.

L’erbolario Lodi Neroli Neroli Perfumed Soap

Repurchasing? No

This was gifted to me by my soon to be sister in law and I love the scent of it! However, I rarely use these bar soaps on my hands or body, but it made for an excellent brush and sponge cleaner as well.

Ornine H Ointment

Repurchasing? Yes

Out of all these products, this is the one that I recommend the most and am happy to discover. Not the most fanciest or interesting product, but one that truly does wonders. This product is something similar to the La Roche Posay Cicaplast, but a cheaper alternative and the cream is thicker. This Japanese Ointment contains chlorhexidine gluconate and chlorhexidine is known to be an antibacterial ingredient which is used to sterilise skin and equipment before surgery. It can be used on burns, cuts, rashes, chapped/dry skin and even on acne. It has really worked wonders and I can’t believe I haven’t discovered this sooner!

Voltaren Emulgel

Repurchasing? Yes

I often overlook these type of creams but this has really helped both my partner and I out recently, so I did want to mention it in my empties. I first got recommended this anti-inflammatory gel, that relieves pain and swelling, to me by my doctor over 10 years ago when I was much more active on the sports field and had problems with my feet aching and cramping. As I’m getting older and less active, I do start to notice my body and muscles aren’t what they used be like, so this gel really helps with muscle strains and back aches. If you do have these types of problems, do look into this gel which can be found at drugstores, but make sure to check if the ingredients are safe for you to use.

That's it for this post, what have you guys been loving or hating in your first quarter?
