[ Review ] The Face Shop Air Cotton Makeup Base 02 Lavender SPF 30 PA++

Happy Thursday Sunshines! Today I’ll be reviewing a face primer from the Face Shop. I’ve seen the brand in stores, but have never tried anything from them until I bought this face primer a few weeks ago. The Face Shop is a Korean skincare company established in 2003 and has since been expanding globally.

So I picked this up, purely because it was so cheap in HKD and the fact that I’ve always been curious to try the brand. Even when I pass by my drugstore the products are on average above USD 10 here so finding something that is way below that (exactly converted it’s USD 3.58) is to me a real bargain.

Shade Options

I only picked up the lavender shade because I don’ have an issue with redness but do suffer from ashy skin so this was the perfect colour correcting primer for me.

The packaging comes in a true white plastic tube with a screw on cap. While this isn’t the most luxurious packaging, I do like it because it’s simple and practical. It’s easy to squeeze out of the tube and small enough. The only issue I have is that the claims are in Korean so I had to search for them online, but the directions and ingredients were written in English.

The cream has a lavender colour with a slight sweet and pleasant scent, nothing too heavily fragranced. The texture is initially quite thick but blends in very easily and doesn’t feel heavy on the skin.

APPLICATION and Wear test

Initially the product has a lavender colour but fades once properly blended in. It can leave a white cast if not blended in properly, which is initially why I didn’t like the product. However, once worked into the skin, it smooths and truly brightens and counteracts the ashy base that I can have. Another plus is that is blurs out my pores and mattifies that area so it isn't as visible.

You won’t see a big difference if you apply a very full coverage foundation, but if you opt for a light to medium coverage it will correct and prime the skin for essentially a more even and brightened complexion and it works well underneath different foundations. Without any foundation it can feel slightly tacky if too much is applied.

I didn’t notice a big difference in terms of the longevity of my foundation but I do always set my foundation with a setting spray and I tend not to wear makeup longer than 8 to 9 hours a day.

Lastly, it didn’t do much for hydration so I did opt for a heavier moisturiser underneath but for oily skin types this wouldn’t be necessary.

Those looking for a face primer that corrects ashy skin

-       Can have flash back and white cast if not blended in properly
-      No noticeable difference in the longevity of makeup wear
-      Not hydrating enough for very dry skin types, i.e. no noticeable hydration added into the skin as claimed

-       Contains SPF
-       Price
-       Corrects, Brightens and Smooths as claimed

I am pleasantly surprised with this primer and will definitely continue to use it. Though it doesn’t give me that added hydration that I typically look for, hydrating primers don’t give me that brightened look and I can balance the hydration out with a heavier moisturiser.

If you’re looking for a primer that brightens the skin with that added sunscreen benefit, do give this one a go as it is very affordable and does work.

Have you tried any new primers or have given this one a go?
