[ Review ] Maybelline Fit Me Dewy and Smooth

Happy Wednesday Sunshines! I've recently bought the Maybelline Fit Me Dewy and Smooth Foundation out of pure impulse because I've seen so many people rave about it for years. So, it was finally time for me to grab a bottle and test it out for myself. Overall I'm quite impressed with it; being that it's a drugstore foundation.

SIZe and price

Even as a drugstore foundation, I do think the price falls relatively cheap which makes it very affordable as you do get the standard foundation size of 1 fl oz/ 30 ml.

SHADE

Drugstore foundations generally don’t have a wide range of shades and with Fenty Beauty bringing out a range of 40 different shades, Maybelline’s Dewy and Smooth range of 16 in the States and only 6 in HK, doesn’t even come close to it. Despite this, the matte and poreless foundation does have a wider range of 40 shades as well in the States.

Maybelline does have an online foundation shade match finder for those that will be shopping online.

PACKAGING

The foundation comes in a long-squared glass jar with a plastic black cap, which granted makes it feel more luxurious but it doesn’t have a pump and makes it not very travel-friendly. Not only do I feel it will make the foundation oxidise more quickly but also that I waste more product. Hence, I wish that they would have saved on the glass jar and used a pump instead and/or plastic bottle instead.

COVERAGE AND FINISH

The foundation with one application has a low medium coverage but it is buildable and can be sheered out with a moisturiser so it is versatile depending on your needs and tools you use for application.  The finish is somewhat dewy and gives a glow to the skin even with a heavy-handed application though not to the extent of some of the higher end foundations like the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. For someone with dry skin, this does make for a great everyday drugstore foundation.

APPLICATION AND WEAR TEST

“Apply foundation onto skin and blend with fingertips or an applicator and blend.”

SamHodgett_Beauty_Review_Maybelline_Fit_Me_Dewy_and_Smooth_3.jpg

I like to apply this foundation with a typical flat foundation brush first and then blend it in with a damp sponge. You could apply and blend this with your fingers when mixed in with your moisturiser or when going in for a light layer only.

I’ve worn this foundation on several occasions and I am impressed with the formula which is surprising since I have very high standards for a foundation. It doesn’t cake up, lasts all day and doesn’t cling to any dry patches. The main issue I have is that it doesn't really set and remains tacky on my skin for a long period of time. So if I don't powder my whole face anything will stick to it and it will crease easily. The powder is essential for my powder bronzer to apply evenly with this foundation but that will cause some dewy-ness to disappear. For a foundation with such a buildable coverage, it is pretty lightweight and comfortable on my skin. Lastly, the foundation photographs beautifully but in real life, I do find that the dewy finish will emphasise the milia on my face which I don't have with my other favourite dewy foundations.

FORMULA

“Silicone based formula with spf”
The foundation is silicone based and does contain an SPF of 18, which is a nice added touch but I would still recommend applying your usual SPF underneath it.

“Fragrance-Free Claim”
The foundation is claimed to be fragrance – free and despite that the foundation doesn’t have any particular strong scent to it, the ingredients lists do mention "fragrance"

“Contains parabens in low quantities”
This foundation does contain various parabens, so stay clear of this foundation if that is an ingredient you avoid.

“Octinoxate”
If you’re wondering what Octinoxate is, it is a chemical that absorbs UVB rays and prevents you from getting sunburns. It is water insoluble and is an ingredient that can be found in many sunscreens. Despite this, the ingredient is harmful to the environment as even in small amounts caused the bleaching of corals, hence some hotels and resort ban guests from using this ingredient in sunscreens. Overall this active ingredient is of moderate hazard and can lead to disrupt your hormones.

MY OVERALL THOUGHTS

I do like this foundation and find that this is a great product if you’re on a budget and have dry skin. I personally doubt I would repurchase it if it finishes, not because I hate it but because I do still prefer my higher end foundations. Despite my dry skin, I do want to test out the matte and poreless one as well because I have heard so many good things about that foundation.

Have you tried this foundation or have another drugstore foundation that you love?
